10 Questions with Jeff Frykholm

Jeff is an adventurous learner who brings a breadth of experience to his present work in fostering group dynamics and building strong teams. His resume reads a bit like a restaurant menu:  public school teacher… college professor… non-profit executive director… college soccer coach… sport psychologist… small business owner… parent of three. And yet, in what might seem like a crooked career path to some, a consistent theme has run throughout his career and adult life: building strong relationships and cohesion with people, and within groups.

After spending the past several decades managing classrooms, leading organizations and coaching teams, Jeff has developed strong intuitions and a well-tested knowledge base about effective team building. The former academic researcher that still lives within him ensures that such intuitions, however, are nested within contemporary theories and scientific research. In his heart of hearts, Jeff remains a teacher, and looks forward to sharing his experiences and knowledge with others who similarly derive great joy out of helping a team develop the confidence and cohesion to function together both powerfully and enthusiastically.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED AND WHY?
"Your greatest havings are your wantings." For a school child, the best day of summer vacation is actually the day before -- the last day of school. Oh, the joy of what lies ahead! There is great power in anticipation of what is before us, in our aspirations for a better self, in the desires that drive us forward. Smelling warm bread in the oven is often sweeter than eating it

WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU AND WHY?
I hate to be cliché but... I love the way my children have each set the course for their own lives.  I suppose I am inspired most by those I love the dearest.

WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU COULD SHARE WITH OUR READERS TO UPLIFT THEM IN LIFE AND CAREER?
Using the words of Jim Collins (who I admire tremendously), "What are you encoded to do?"  Finding the overlap between what you love to do, with what you are encoded to do, puts you in your sweet spot. Can you find that overlap in your life and career?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK AND HOW DID IT INSPIRE YOU?
The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. This is a lovely coming-of-age story about a young boy growing up in a divided South Africa. "First with the head, then with the heart."

WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
I love getting on my road bike and hitting the pavement for a couple hours of wind in the hair!

WHAT IS ONE TREND IN YOUR INDUSTRY THAT EXCITES YOU?
As teams, groups, businesses and organizations continue to push the envelope in seeking that iterative and often illusive 2% growth, mental health, mind management, and psychological resilience have moved center stage. It is exciting to be able to share such strategies at a time when more and more leaders are recognizing the power of mentality on group dynamics and performance.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU DO EVERY DAY THAT ADDS TO YOUR SUCCESS?
Exercise. When I neglect to push my physical body, my intellectual capacity and creativity take a turn for the worse.

WHAT TECHNOLOGY PRODUCT CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?
I love a good podcast!

PLEASE, FINISH THIS STATEMENT: LEADERSHIP IS...
social influence: part science, part art, part joy, part pain.
